FIND DDH

The Disciples Divinity House is located at 1156 East 57th Street, between Woodlawn and University Avenues. It is adjacent to the University’s main quadrangle and one block east of the University’s Regenstein Library. Enter on the east side of the courtyard; University Church is on the west side of the courtyard.

From Lake Shore Drive: Exit at 57th Street and the Museum of Science and Industry. Follow the signs toward the University of Chicago. You will pass the Museum and turn onto the Midway Plaisance, a park-like boulevard that runs east-west between 59th and 61st Streets. At the Woodlawn Avenue light, turn right and proceed north to 57th Street, where you will turn left. DDH is immediately on the right. Park on the street.

From the Dan Ryan Expressway (I90/94): Exit at Garfield Boulevard (55th Street), turn east onto Garfield. Garfield becomes a two-way street at Washington Park. In the park, turn left onto 57th Street. DDH is not quite a mile to the east. Park on the street. (If you miss 57th Street, turn left onto the Midway Plaisance. Then, at the Woodlawn Avenue light, turn left and proceed to 57th Street. Turn left again; DDH will be immediately on the right.)

Transportation from O’Hare Airport: The Omega Airport Shuttle departs hourly from the Bus/Shuttle Center, Door #4, at fifteen minutes before the hour. Ask the driver to drop you at the Quadrangle Club (1155 East 57th Street). DDH is directly across the street.

Transportation from Midway Airport: A cab ride is the quickest way to reach DDH. If your driver takes 55th Street/Garfield Boulevard, your fare will be about $20.

 

 
KRISTINE A. CULP, DEAN

Kristine E. CulpKristine A. Culp has been Dean of the Disciples Divinity House and Senior Lecturer in Theology in the Divinity School since 1991. She is the seventh dean of Disciples House and the first woman to be chief executive of a Disciples theological education institution. She led the Disciples Divinity House through its centennial anniversary in 1994, and more recently, in marking the seventy-fifth anniversary of its Chapel of the Holy Grail with a Celebration of the Arts, a published collection of prayers, and the renewal of the chapel and building.

An alumna of the Disciples Divinity House and a Ph.D. graduate of the Divinity School, she also earned the Master of Divinty degree from Princeton Theological Seminary and a Bachelor of General Studies degree from the University of Iowa. From 1985-91, she was a member of the faculty of Saint Paul School of Theology in Kansas City, Missouri.

Her academic interests center in constructive theology, especially on the nature of Christian life and community. She has written on theology and experience, ecclesiology, feminist and womanist theologies, the use of fiction in theological thinking, and issues facing the Disciples of Christ. An avid traveler, she has also written about pilgrimage and tourism.

She currently chairs the Board of Directors of DisciplesWorld, Inc. She has served on numerous boards, including the General Board and the Administrative Committee of the Christian Church (Disciples of Church), the former Commission on Theology, and as chair of the Council on Theological Education. She is a former president of the Association of Disciples for Theological Discussion and was a founding member of the Forrest Moss Institute, an association of Disciples women scholars. She was a founding member of Saint Andrew Christian Church in Olathe, Kansas.

BRITTANY BARBER, ASSOCIATE DEAN

Brittany Barber

An alumna of the Disciples Divinity House and the University of Chicago, Brittany D. Barber is an ordained minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). She completed her M.Div. and A.M. in Social Work in June 1999. Following graduation, she was ordained in the Disciples Divinity House Chapel of the Holy Grail. From 2000-2005 she served as minister of First Christian Church of Youngstown, Ohio.

As Associate Dean, she develops relationships with alumni/ae and friends of the House, relates to congregations of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), recruits prospective students, edits the Bulletin, and schedules Monday evening activities.

MARSHA G-H. PEELER, ADMINISTRATOR

Marsha G-H. PeelerMarsha G-H. Peeler has been Administrator since July of 2000. She gives day-to-day oversight to the financial and physical well-being of the House.

Marsha had been a member of the Divinity School staff since 1991, serving as Assistant Program Coordinator of the Martin Marty Center and Faculty Secretary. Previously she was a medical secretary for the hematology/oncology section of the University's Department of Medicine and has also worked in the University Comptroller's office.
