75 Years of Habitation

In October 1928, House Scholars first moved in to the new limestonegothic building at 1156 East 57thStreet. The building was designed byarchitect Henry K. Holsman, built atthe cost of $114,102.75, and then furnishedthrough the generosity of Mrs.Gertrude Gary Sutcliffe.

Edward Scribner Ames had become the House's third dean the year
before. W. E. Garrison, his predecessor, settled into building's 'hermitage'
(a hide-away room reached by a staircase circling up behind the chapel) as his studio and study. What we now know as Monday night dinners were held on Thursday evenings.
