75 Years of Habitation
In October 1928, House Scholars first moved in to
the new limestonegothic building at 1156 East 57thStreet. The building
was designed byarchitect Henry K. Holsman, built atthe cost of $114,102.75,
and then furnishedthrough the generosity of Mrs.Gertrude Gary Sutcliffe.
Edward Scribner Ames had become the House's third
dean the year
before. W. E. Garrison, his predecessor, settled into building's
'hermitage'
(a hide-away room reached by a staircase circling up behind the
chapel) as his studio and study. What we now know as Monday night
dinners were held on Thursday evenings.
