Stephanie Paulsell's (1985) new book, Religion Around Virginia Woolf, has been published by Pennsylvania State University Press. "Paulsell examines the ideas about God that hover around Woolf’s writings and in the minds of her characters. She also considers how Woolf, drawing from religious language and themes in her novels and in her reflections on the practices of reading and writing, created a literature that did, and continues to do, a particular kind of religious work." Congratulations to House Scholar Andrew Packman, who successfully completed his midpoint review for his dissertation on December 17. The dissertation takes up questions of moral motivation, affectivity, and the recalcitrance of American racism.
Congratulations to Jonathan Cahill (2015) and Kristina Walter who were married on November 15 in Ohio. Cynthia Lindner (1978) officiated the wedding.
Kerry Waller Dueholm (2000) and Ben Dueholm have co-written, "Getting Attached: Foster and Substitute Parenting," a chapter in When Kids Ask Hard Questions, edited by Bromleigh McCleneghan and Karen Ware Jackson, published by Chalice Press, 2019.
The Aliites: Religion and Law in the Religions of Noble Drew Ali, by Spencer Dew (1998), has been published by the University of Chicago Press. Dew traces the history and impact of Noble Drew Ali’s "radical fusion of law and faith." Ali was the leader of the Moorish Science Temple of America in the early 1920s. "Dew uncovers the influence of Ali’s teachings, including the many movements they inspired.... Examining this robustly creative yet largely overlooked lineage of African American religious thought, Dew provides a window onto religion, race, citizenship, and law in America."
Congratulations to Katherine Raley (2008) and Nate Alexander on their engagement and upcoming wedding on October 18. Katherine continues to serve as an advancement specialist at Lexington Theological Seminary. She is also serving as chair of the board of Disciples Home Missions.
Danielle Cox (2012) has been called to be the Senior Minister of Avon Christian Church in Avon, Indiana,
a suburb of Indianapolis. She previously served as minister of the First Christian Church of Texas City, Texas.
Congratulations to PhD student Joel Brown and Erin James-Brown on the birth of Margot Lynn Brown on September 10.
George Ewing Massay (1950) died in Virginia Beach, Virginia, on September 1. He was 92. He was a graduate of Bethany College and entered the University of Chicago as a Disciples Divinity House Scholar in 1950. He married Alice Crook on August 18, 1951, at Wadsworth Church of Christ, Wadsworth, Ohio. George and Alice served Christian Churches and Churches of Christ in Canada, England, Missouri, and Virginia. Survivors include his wife, Alice; his son, Jim, and a host of extended family.
Root & Branch Church in Chicago, a congregation led by Tim Kim and House Scholar and PhD student Virginia White, is featured in a story from RNS (Religion News Service) on August 29 about the dinner church movement. Former resident Elsa Marty also appears in the article.
